Diving In diving beauty and grace must be added to feats of strength and agility while the body is moving through the air. The diver must have total body control and good kinesthetic awareness. Divers always compete against members of the same sex. They perform a list of dives that are made up of easier dives called compulsories, and harder dives called “optionals”. The group of compulsory dives has a limit of combined difficulty and must cover all groups of dives. The optional dives must also cover all groups of dives, but has no difficulty limit. There are basically six groups of dives that can be performed: Forward, Backward, Reverse, Inward, Twisting, and Hand Stand (tower). Each dive must be performed in one of the 4 defined positions: Tuck (C), Pike (P), Layout (A), and Free (D). A dive is not judged on entry alone. All phases involved in the performance are considered: the approach, take-off, technique and grace during flight, and entry into the water. Points are awarded from zero to ten, according to the opinion of the judge based on the criteria and performance. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
