Alpine Skiing for Wed Mar 03, 2010 Alpine ski racing is a sport in which an athlete skis down a hill through a number of gates that determine the path. The object is to get through all the gates from start to finish in the shortest amount of time. Sophisticated timing equipment, capable of measuring to 1000th's of a second is used for the race. There are different discipline - what differentiates the disciplines is the size of the turn required by the racer. This is determined by the distance between the gates. Slalom requires the quickest, shortest turns with distances of 40-12 metres between gates, while giant slalom is generally over 20 metres. The fastest disciplines are super giant slalom (Super G) and downhill. These events are large turns that see athletes reaching speeds over 80 km/hr. Equipment includes skis, boots, poles, helmets, goggles, spine protection, shin guards, face guard, mouth guard, pole guards and a speed suit. Qualified race officials ensure that races are held to the highest safety standards.
